Scope: All Genpact sites.Responsibility: All the Medical and Para-Medical Staff on the site, EHS personnel, Site Logistics Leader, and Site Leader.Definitions:Bio-Medical Waste: any waste, which is generated during the diagnosis, treatment or immunisation of human beings or animals or in research activities pertaining thereto or in the production or testing of biologicals, and including categories mentioned in Schedule I of Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. (Appended)Bio-Medical Waste produced in Genpact Medical Rooms:1. Category No 4 Waste sharps: needles, syringes, scalpels, blades, glass, etc. that may cause puncture and cuts. This includes both used and unused sharps.2. Category No 5 Discarded Medicines: wastes comprising of outdated, contaminated and discarded medicines.3. Category No 6 Solid Waste: Items contaminated with blood, and body fluids including cotton, dressings, soiled plaster casts, lines, beddings, other material contaminated with blood.4. Category No. 7 Solid Waste: wastes generated from disposable items other than the waste sharps such as tubings, catheters, intravenous sets etc.Procedure: (for Categories 4, 6 & 7)1. The Medical Team along with the EHS team should identify the agency which is responsible for proper handling and disposal of the Bio-Medical Waste as laid down by the Environmental (protection) Act for the respective city.2. The Medical team to procure the colour coded waste bins / disposal bags from the identified agency. (Colour coding appended)3. The waste to be collected in the segregated form in the respective bins.4. The agency to come and collect the thus segregated wastes as per the statute on the agreed day and time of the week. Procedure: (for Category 5):1. Expired Tablets/Capsules: Defoil the tablet/capsule. The tablet/capsule to be dissolved overnight in a bucket filled with water. Water to be drained off in the Medical Room Sink. Discarded foils to be discarded after proper inspection into general waste.2. Expired Injections: Ampoules: Break the ampoule and discard the injection into the sink. The sharp of the ampoule to be discarded in the sharps bin. Vial: Open the vial and discard the injection in the sink. Destroy the label on the vial and discard it in the sharps bin. 3. Expired Ointments/Creams: Squeeze out the ointment/cream into a plastic bag and discard it after securing the mouth into the yellow bin. Deface the tube by scratching with a scalpel and discard it into the red bin. 4. Expired Liquids/Syrups/Suspensions: Drain out the liquid/syrup/suspension in the sink. Deform the cap and discard in general waste. Deface the label on the bottle and discard in general waste.5. Empty Aerosol Cans: Puncture the can with a sharp object and discard in general waste.Record Keeping: A log book for the Bio-Medical Waste collection should be maintained separately from other records which should be duly signed with date and time by the representative of the collection agency and the duty nurse in whose presence the waste was collected. It must be ensured that chemical treatment ensures disinfection. # Multilation/shredding must be such so as to prevent unauthorised reuse. There will be no chemical pretreatment before incineration. Chlorinated plastics shall not be incinerated. * Deep burial shall be an option available only in towns with population less than five lakhs and in rural areas.
