COMMENTS DUE: December 4,2005 A meeting of the Standards Technical Panel of UL for Furnaces and Heating Equipment, STP 296, was held on October 18, 2005 at ULs Northbrook Office. As a result of
、 discussions regarding topics 1 and 11, two workings groups were formed. At the end of this report is a list of these working groups, with their objectives and a list of their participants from the meeting. If you would like to volunteer for one of these working groups, please contact Tim Corder at
、William.T.C by December 4, 2005 1. Used cooking oil. MEETING DISCUSSION Travis Hardin of UL made a presentation regarding the potential use of used cooking oil as a fuel source for used oil-burning air-heating appliances covered by UL 296A. Meeting attendees discussed some potential issues that woul
、d need to be addressed during development of these requirements. In particular, the specifications of the test fuel to be used during evaluation would need to be defined. As a result of the discussion
、s at the meeting, Working Group 1 was formed. Please refer to the end of this report for Working Group 1 charges and members. 2. Bio-Diesel. MEETING DISCUSSION Travis Hardin of UL presented the topic of using bio-diesel as a potential fuel for oil burners covered by UL 296. Concerns expressed at the
、 meeting regarding bio-diesel relate to its combustion; its compatibility with burners, in particular the seals of burners; and its storage, stability, and handling. However, there was unanimous support from those in attendance with adding B20 fuel to UL 296 once that data has been developed to addr
、ess the aforementioned concerns. This was regarded as a first step, which may lead to the use of higher percentage bio-diesel in the future. 3. New UL 295. MEETING DISCUSSION Travis Hardin of UL discussed UL?s plans to develop a Standard for Commercial-Industrial Gas Burners, UL 295. The main intent
、 of developing this standard is to enable burner assemblies to be evaluated independent of the main appliance. Also, it is believed that the development of UL 295 would serve to focus the scopes of UL 795 and UL 2096, and reduce confusion that AHJs and industry members might experience regarding the
、se products. The main sources of these requirements would be existing requirements in UL 795 and UL 2096. A suggestion was made during the meeting that integral burner requirements be kept in UL 795 and to only have requirements for conversion burners in UL 295. There was general support for this su
、ggestion from those in attendance at the meeting. 4. Document for electrical requirements for combustion equipment. MEETING DISCUSSION Travis Hardin of UL presented his concept of combining the electrical requirements for combustion equipment into a single document. The intent of this concept is to
、group requirements that are intended to be the same across these standards into a single document. An alternate suggestion was made to group all the electrical requirements in the same Section of each standard. While this would still mean that there are separate electrical requirements in each stand
、ard, the intention of this suggestion was that they might more easily be kept the same were the requirements located in the same place in each Standard. Based on the input provided by the attendees, UL will consider the two options discussed at the meeting. 5. STP 296 future. MEETING DISCUSSION Trav
、is Hardin presented UL?s intention of splitting STP 296 into two separate STPs, one for gas appliances, and another for oil appliances. An attendee suggested and alternative approach, whereby, the STP is broken into two STPs, one covering component (or burner) standards, and one covering standards f
、or end products. Another suggestion was made that the STP be left as it currently is organized. A straw poll of STP members in attendance indicated that the majority in attendance supported breaking the STP into two STPs, one for component standards and one for end product standards. Please note tha
、t the STP as a whole would be polled prior to any action being taken regarding the reorganization of STP 296. Copyright Underwriters Laboratories Inc. MEETING DISCUSSION Travis Hardin presented that the ASME CSD-1 Committee is proposing safety component markings for packaged boiler assemblies. This marking woul
、d consist of a list of the approved safety components being applied to the boiler. The intent of this marking would be to assist AHJs in determining the approved safety components for use with the packaged boiler assembly. An STP member stated that the CSD-1 marking is still in development, but that
、 it may be finalized after the next CSD-1 meeting. Once that marking is finalized, UL will prepare proposals to incorporate this marking into the standards covered by STP 296. However, were the marking adopted, it would be optional for manufacturers to include it on their products. 7. Canadian boile
、r assemblies evaluated to CAN 1 - 3.1. MEETING DISCUSSION Travis Hardin discussed potential harmonization of UL 795 with CAN 1-3.1. CAN 1-3.1 has been revised to cover boiler assemblies from 400,000 Btu/hr - 50,000,000 Btu/hr, at a gas inlet pressure of greater than 1/2 psig. Some STP members expres
、sed concern that CAN 1-3.1 is out of date, and that it might be beneficial to pursue harmonization more through CAN 1-3.1 adopting the requirements of UL 795, rather than the adopting the requirements of CAN 1-3.1 into UL 795. There was general support from those in attendance for that path of harmo
、nization. UL will consider pursuing the harmonization. However, prior to the effort being undertaken, the STP will be surveyed to gauge its support for the effort. 8. New Business - Definition of Proof of Closure Overtravel Interlock. MEETING DISCUSSION STP member James Jagers presented his concerns
