3、ine.TheLifeoftheAuthorLoisLowryAfterreceivingherBachelorsDegreeinEnglishLiterature,Lowrybeganwritingherfirstbook.Herfirstchildrensbookwas A Summer To Diewhichwaspublishedin1977.ShepublishedNumber the Stars in1990whichreceivedtheNewberyMedal.TheNewberryMedalTheJohnNewberyMedal,honorstheauthoroftheyea

7、smeansthatJonashashisjobinlifepickedforhim.Everychildisreferredtoasanumber.Inthisparticularpartofthebook,JonasisaTwelve.ThismeansthathegetstotakepartintheCeremonyofTwelve.ThisiswhereJonasjobispickedforhimbypeoplewhohavebeenwatchinghimandobservinghisactions.Jonasisgivenofthejobofthegiver.Thisisaveryi

16、uman life.TherearemanyimportantthemeswithinThe Giver.Some of them are:TheImportanceofMemory:ThisisthemostimportantthemeinThe Giver,theuseofmemoryinhumanlife.Ifpeoplecannotrememberthingsthentheycannotrememberpainanditsastheyneverexperienceditinthefirstplace.Jonasistheonlyonewhoseesotherpeoplesexperie

17、nces.Heistheonlyonetotrulyfeeltheirpain.Andwithpainlikethisthereisnottruehappiness.ContThemesTheImportanceoftheIndividual:TheCeremonyofTwelveiswherethechildrengettofinallyfeelimportant.Thechildrenarelookedatasnumbersnotasindividuals.Jonasisachildinthebeginningbutmaturesintohisownindividualbecauseofh
