21、ngstress.Thetechniqueconsideredinthisdocumentcalculatesthestressfrommeasurementofthebowingofthindiscsorstripsofwell-characterizedmaterialsofknownthicknessthathavebeencoatedononesideonly.Itisassumedthatthedeformationiselastic,i.e.ifthecoatingweretoberemovedthesubstratewouldreturntoitsinitialshape.Pro

22、videdthatthecoatingisthincomparedtothethicknessofthesubstrate(coatingthickness20m)radiiofcurvatureusingopticaltechniques.Beforemeasuringtheinitialprofile,defineameasuringrange(lengthA),alongthelengthaofthesubstrate(alongadiameterforthedisc).Inordertoavoidanyedgeeffects,themeasuringrangeshouldstopata

23、distancefromtheendsequaltoatleast20timesthesamplethickness.Makesomereferencemarks,e.g.Vickersindentations,onthesubstratealongastraightlineatlengthdirection,sothatthefinalprofilecanbemeasuredatthesamelocationandinthesamedirectionastheinitialone.Thisprocedureisessentialwhentheinitialprofileissomewhatd

24、ifferentfromaperfectcircle.Itisrecommendedthat,wherehardnessindentsareusedasreferencemarks,indentationsshouldbeproducedusingamicrohardnesstesterataloadofnogreaterthan1kg.Formeasuringtheprofile,thesampleshallliefreely,withoutanyexternalstress.Placethestripontwosupports,sothatitoverhangseachsupportbya

25、quarterofitslength;proceedsimilarlyforadisc.NOTEInmanycases,supportingthesampleonitsendswillhavenegligibleeffectuponthecurvature.However,theuseofsupportswillavoidproblemswithstabilityofthesampleifoneorbothendsofthesamplearenotperpendiculartothesides.Especiallyforthinsamples,ensurethattheweightofthes

26、ampledoesnotchangeitsshape:turningthestrip(ordisc)overonthesupportsshouldleavetheprofileunchanged,exceptforthesign.Inthecaseofopticalmicroscopy,foreachprofile,measurethecoordinates(Xfzi)ofabout10pointsdistributeduniformlyalongthepredefinedmeasuringrange.Theordinatezicorrespondstotheverticalpositiono

27、fthemicroscopeobjectiveforwhichthepointxiofthesurfaceofthesampleisintheimageplane.Thefocusingaxisofthemicroscopeshallbeperpendiculartothesurfacetobecoated,andespeciallytoitslongitudinalaxis.Theinitialcurvaturecanbedisregardedinsofarasitisverylow(5%)whencomparedwiththefinalcurvature.Aftertheinitialprofileismeasured,thesampleshallbehandledinsuchawayastoavoidchangesininternalstressorinirreversibledeformation.7.2 DepositionofthecoatingThetestmethodreliesupontheco
